Victoria, BC – In a Saturday night tilt at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, the Victoria Royals squared off against the Tri-City Americans for the second time in as many nights. The Royals gave Patrik Polivka the start in goal, while the Americans replied with Eric Comrie.
The first period saw the two teams play a tight-checking game while the Royals had the best scoring chance in the opening 20 minutes. Forward Mitch Deacon fed a breakaway pass to Tim Traber whose wrist shot was turned aside by the blocker of Comrie and the first period ended in a scoreless draw.
The Royals opened the scoring on a goal by Brett Cote at 5:12 of the middle frame. Cote’s slap shot from the right point took a deflection off the stick of a Tri-City defender before it beat Comrie up high. The Americans then responded with a goal by Connor Rankin just over two minutes later while on a two-man advantage. Rankin accepted a Justin Feser pass at the right face-off dot and buried a wrist shot over Polivka’s shoulder. Steven Hodges would put the home side back in front with a shorthanded tally at the 8:47 mark. Hodges chipped the puck past a Tri-City defenceman at the Royals’ blueline and broke in alone before he made a quick move to his forehand and slotted the puck under Comrie’s arm. The Americans would tie the game once again before the end of the frame. At 13:40, Michal Plutnar’s shot from the right point deflected off of a Royals’ stick and found its way to an open Williams who deposited the puck into the open net. The two teams headed into the second intermission tied at two.
The Royals regained the lead early in the third on a goal by Brandon Magee. Jesse Zgraggen’s shot was initially saved, but Magee collected the rebound and fired a backhander between his legs from behind the goal line that ricocheted off Comrie’s arm and in at 1:19. Victoria added to their lead at 14:53 on Tim Traber’s second goal of the season. Traber picked up the puck inside the Tri-City blueline and wristed a shot that beat Comrie blocker side. The Americans pulled their goalie early for the extra attacker, but Brandon Magee gained possession of the puck in the neutral zone and fired the puck into the empty net at 16:38. The empty-netter gave Magee his second of the night and secured the win for the Royals. Victoria 5 Tri-City 2.
Victoria went 0/4=0.0% on the powerplay, while Tri-City went 1/5=20.0%. The Royals outshot the Americans 33-32.
The Royals will now head out on a three-game road trip that begins Wednesday when they visit Kelowna to take on the Rockets. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. Victoria will then travel to Everett and Seattle for a weekend U.S. Division swing on Friday and Saturday, respectively, before returning home. The next Royals’ home game goes Tuesday, January 15th when the Kamloops Blazers visit Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
